1 Peter 4:4King James Version (KJV)4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
There are only two kinds of people on this planet. The ones who think we are strange because we do not wallow in sin and those who think they are strange because they do wallow in sin. Sure there are christians who do not live in such a way that the world does not think that they are strange. Don’t you think that is strange? Let your light shine in such a way that the watching world will think “Wow! there must be a God because people just don’t act like that! God’s ways and thoughts are not our thoughts so if we begin to act in them we have to seem strange to the world. Given all the power and wisdom and just plain weirdness of God shouldn’t we seem weird too. Weirdly, being peaceful and passionate, caring and calm, striving and resting, hating sin and never having anger out of control, in the world but not having it in us, in the battle and delighting in the sure victory, Weird!
“Vex not thy spirit at the course of things, They heed not thy vexation. How ludicrous and outlandish is astonishment At anything that may happen in life.” I ran across this interesting text from Marcus Aurelius, it reminded me of a thought I have often shared. “The greatest of all insanities is to expect sanity in this crazy world.”
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
That’s a command! Quit thinking this crazy world is some sort of exception and that life is meant to be logical. Only when godliness has an influence do we find glimpses of sanity this side of heaven.
That’s a command! Rejoice and revel in partaking in the effects of sin and fighting with it by the power of God until He returns and sanity finally wins out.
Be weird and find the insanity of this world to be exactly what one would expect in a sin plagued planet. Remain calm, the Lord is in control. Don’t water down the insanity in order to feel hope, but rather look at it in all it’s awesome craziness and use it at a measure of how much bigger is God’s wisdom and Grace.
