David bearing the ark of testament into Jerusalem    SING SING SINGING I GO ALONG LIFE’S ROAD, PRAISING THE LORD

Singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

In the Old Testament, Jerusalem was being attacked by three enemy armies. The king fell on his face before the Lord and confessed that without help there was no hope. God told him not to fear just watch the deliverance of the Lord. So he sent the singers our before the people and  watched the deliverance the Lord brought.II Chronicles 20:21 KJV–And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say,   ” Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.”And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

The Lord is really interested in the thoughts of our hearts. What could be more helpful in taking every thought into captivity than filling the inner spaces with hymns and scripture put to music?
I am known as the doctor who sings as he walks around the hospital. I have even been known to sing in grocery stores, (much to the embarrassment of my children and grandchildren.) It’s not that I am always happy, in fact, I tend to sing more when under stress or if feeling depressed.
Pause for a moment, can you think of a song that speaks to your heart for comfort and encouragement, or helps fix your eyes on the Lord? If not, then I suggest you pick one that speaks to you the next time you are worshiping and work to memorize it. You might have to ask the music people at church to run a copy of the words, since most churches put the words on the screen. Only memorized words, hid in your heart, will work under stress.
Isn’t it enough to speak to ourselves in words without singing? Probably not, if your goal is comforting your heart, steadying your inner turmoil and increasing worship. God has designed music to get his truth past our inner “YES BUT” so that it becomes part of us and not just a mental agreement.
Fortunately, we don’t have to sing like the soloists at church or on the radio. We may sing a joyful noise or even sing the blues and God will bless the singing by speaking into our heart.
(This  next passage is believed to talk to the king of Tyre but also to satan directly) Ezekiel 28:12

Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus(Satan), and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes(musical instruments) was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Remember that not all music serves God. Lucifer, when he was serving God and walking in the midst of the holy fire at the base of the great throne, had tabrets and pipes in him. He was a living musical instrument! It is no wonder that, after being cast out of heaven, he still uses music that causes worship of self or of him. Tribal people have often asked the missionaries why their children are calling the demons with their modern music.
You can test the spirit of the music you chose  to use as a tool or weapon by the focus it produces.  If you are calmed and your focus is on the word and Jesus, then SING SING SING.  Resist the devil by singing and he hates it and will flee.

John Wesley’s Instructions for Singing 1761

  1. “Learn these Tunes before you learn any others ….
  2. Sing them exactly as they are printed here without altering or mending them at all …
  3. Sing ALL. See that you join with the congregation as frequently as you can …
  4. Sing lustily and with a good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength …
  5. Sing modestly. Do not bawl, so as to be heard above or distinct from the rest of the congregation, that you may not destroy the harmony …
  6. Sing in Time. Whatever time is sung, be sure to keep with it. Do not run before nor stay behind it … and take care not to sing too slow…
  7. (Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing Him more than yourself or any other creature.”)

One thought on “THE WEAPON OF SONG

  1. Thank you for your words about singing. My mom will sometimes catch me singing and once asked if I was singing to make myself happy. Ii told her I was singing because I was happy. Sometimes I burst into a hymn when we are driving somewhere in the car. And mom joins in with a perfect alto harmony. She has a beautiful talent for singing harmony. Also, I can remember my Dad humming and it always seemed that when he hummed, all was right with the world. Again thanks for bringing these thoughts about music to mind.
